Emergency teams contained the blaze, while security has been reinforced. KPS says findings will determine the cause and guide future safety measures in prison facilities across the country.

Investigations are underway after a fire destroyed 30 staff housing units at Lang’ata Women’s Maximum Security Prison.

The Kenya Prisons Service confirmed on Thursday that there are no casualties, despite total property loss.

Emergency teams contained the blaze, while security has been reinforced. KPS says findings will determine the cause and guide future safety measures in prison facilities across the country.

The fire broke out on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at approximately 19:30 hours within the staff quarters of the prison facility, causing extensive destruction to residential units occupied by personnel.

“A fire incident occurred on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at the staff quarters within Lang’ata Women’s Maximum Security Prison at approximately 19:30 hours,” the Kenya Prisons Service said in a statement.

Authorities confirmed that the blaze spread rapidly, consuming dozens of housing units. “The fire affected a total of 30 housing units, which were completely destroyed,” the statement said.

Officials added that the severity of the fire left no room for recovery of personal belongings. “Regrettably, no property was salvaged from the affected units,” the service noted.

Despite the scale of the destruction, authorities said there were no casualties or injuries reported. “We are, however, relieved to confirm that no casualties or injuries were reported,” the statement added.

Emergency response teams were deployed shortly after the fire broke out, helping to contain the situation and prevent further spread within the facility.

The agency credited a coordinated effort among several institutions for bringing the blaze under control, highlighting the role of the County Government Fire Brigade, the Kenya Defence Forces, and fire engines from Kahawa Garrison.

“The Kenya Prisons Service extends its sincere appreciation for their prompt, coordinated, and effective response in bringing the situation under control,” the statement said.

Following the incident, additional security measures were implemented within the affected area to ensure safety and maintain order.

Officers from nearby correctional institutions were deployed to reinforce the situation on the ground.

These included personnel from Nairobi West Prison, Jamhuri Prison, and Nairobi Medium Prison.

“Security within the staff quarters has since been reinforced to ensure continued safety and order in the affected area,” the statement said.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire, with no immediate indication of what may have triggered the incident.

“Investigations into the cause of the fire are currently underway. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” the Kenya Prisons Service said.

The destruction of the staff housing units is expected to have a significant impact on prison personnel who rely on institutional accommodation. While no injuries were reported, the loss of homes and personal belongings presents immediate challenges for affected staff and their families.

The incident also raises broader concerns about fire safety and emergency preparedness within staff housing located inside high-security facilities.

Such environments often present unique risks due to their structure and proximity to operational areas.

Lang’ata Women’s Maximum Security Prison is one of Kenya’s main correctional facilities for female inmates, supported by staff who live within or near the compound.

The presence of residential quarters within the facility makes fire incidents particularly disruptive.

However, the swift containment of the blaze suggests that emergency response systems were effective in preventing a potentially more severe outcome.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to determine the cause of the fire and assess whether additional safety measures are needed to prevent similar incidents in the future.

For now, the focus remains on maintaining order, supporting affected staff, and ensuring that security within the facility remains intact as recovery efforts begin.
